13 Sep Smart Waste Management
Waste management has not been the exception of processes optimized and automated with smart city technologies, and as such, the field of waste management has been subject to large innovations using ICT. The “smart bin” communicates information on fill levels and ensures collection only when the bin is full. Fewer collection visits reduce congestion and traffic interruption, resulting also in cleaner and safer streets.
Krasimira Dimitrova (2018) claims in her article “Innovative and intelligent solutions for recycling of household waste in Bulgaria”: Waste from industrial and other human activities, as well as household waste is a major source of environmental pollution. Hence, if it is controlled and managed in a adequate and intelligent way, the waste can be a valuable source of raw materials, especially considering that many of them are becoming more and more scarce. waste management can greatly contribute to economic growth and work places creation.
However, the so-called “smart waste management” has not been the exception of processes optimized and automated with smart city technologies, and as such, the field of waste management has been subject to large innovations using ICT. The “smart bin” communicates information on fill levels and ensures collection only when the bin is full. Fewer collection visits reduce congestion and traffic interruption, resulting also in cleaner and safer streets. In addition, the smart waste management provides the following benefits:
- The “smart bin” communicates information on fill levels and ensures collection only when the bin is full.
- Fewer collection visits reduce congestion and traffic interruption, resulting also in cleaner and safer streets.
- Traffic reduction due to fewer collection visits helps reduce carbon dioxide and other emissions.
Your challenge:
The local municipality in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, decided to integrate the so-called “smart waste management” through the IoT integration of smart bins across the city.
Create a social campaign which aims to:
Raise public awareness of utilizing renewable energy
Improve street sanitation
Encourage recycling
Collect and analyze area-specific data on waste volumes for better planning
Increase WiFi coverage with their function as a free public WiFi hotspot
